After Hurricane Sandy Update
Although the storm is over, our city reels from it and comes together to repair itself and return to normalcy. Here are some updates:{Friday, Nov 2; 11:30am}
Schools/Education:
Newark Public Schools closed Monday and Tuesday for CHILDREN. HOTLINE for Newark Public Schools now open 973 733 3333. MONDAY all school based staff will return to school. Tuesday schools will be closed. Rest of week back in school (change of schedule)
SAT scheduled for Baringer HS this Saturday is rescheduled.
VOTING will happen on Tuesday. No resident will have to leave their ward.
Recycling and garbage pick-up now on regular schedule.
Power update:
-The Essex Station did not suffer as much damage as originally thought during the flood, and work is being performed without major delays.
-North Ward and East Ward: The substation feeding the remaining areas without power will be placed back on service sometime on Friday. Not sure of actual time estimate.
- Vailsburg Section, and West Ward: heavy damage to substation. Also affecting Hillside, and Maplewood. It can be up to 3 days.
- Once substations are placed back on services, there will be pockets of no power due to downed wires and poles, and those repairs can take another 3 days
Newark Museum is open and warm, free for residents and you can charge up your phones.

This is just posted by Cory Booker: The Essex Switching Station which services East & North Wards will take 1 to 2 days to repair. Customers will be without power until then. And some - due to pole damage - could take longer.
South &Central Ward Residents without power aren't affected by switching station pblms. It's pole/wire damage. Power restored today to 4days.
West Ward Residents waiting to hear more details.

Transportation:
PATH and NJ Transit trains and Newark light rail are still suspended due to major damage/flooding in tunnels and below ground stations). Buses are still suspended due to downed limbs and power lines which make some roads impassable. Service will be restored as it becomes safe.
Education:
Newark Public Schools and Essex VoTech will be closed Thursday. Rutgers-Newark and Essex County College will remain closed and reopen on Monday, November 5th. NJIT closed on Thursday 11/1.
County Offices:
County offices reopen Thursday, November 1
Halloween:
As per Governor Christie - Halloween has officially been postponed until November 5th.
Shelter:
John F. Kennedy Recreation Center, Central Ward, 211 West Kinney Street, with the entrance on Howard Street is still open as a shelter. Pet friendly.

Reports/Tips:
- Report trees, poles, or wires that are knocked down to 973-733-4311. Do not assume it has been reported. Take Action.
- There WILL be regularly scheduled city garbage collection tomorrow.
- Power Outages. There are still pockets of Newark without power. To report power outages call PSE&G - 800-436-PSEG (7734)
- Gasleaks. City is getting reports of gas leaks. This is an emergency situation, please call 911 if you suspect gas.
- If you're still without power, don't use generators or grills indoors; the result could be carbon monoxide poisoning.
- For FEMA assistance, please follow info from FEMA's website for our area.
