It's the last month of summer, so make it a good one. Here are 12 things you should mark down on your calendar and not miss.
August 2: Finale of Guard d'Avant
Military Park has been alive Tuesday evenings for Guard d'Avant music festival created by Newarkers Peter & Shayna Winstead. Enjoy the music and hang in Burg's Garden with the young and hip of Newark. Performances by Kitty Cash, Anna Wise, Peter Winstead Jr.
August 2: National Night Out
Joing the national movement A Night Out Against Crime done by the Department of Public Safety at Newark Schools Arena with bouncy rides, dunk tank, music, entertainment and more. Details here.
August 5: Storytime at Military Park
Starting August 5 and running Fridays through the end of the month...with Partnership for Maternal and Child Health at Military Park. The storytime includes story, songs and even a snack. More here.
August 6: Dance Newark
Riverfront Park celebrates DANCE and it's legacy in the City of Newark with movements from around the world with performances by: Heritage Irish Dance Company, Ricardo Santiago, Nai Ni Chen Dance Company and special performances by Maurice Chestnut and Storyboard P. Get all the details here.
August 7: Latin American Festival
This second annual festival includes: Grammy Award winner Elvis Crespo, a surprise chart-topping Latin singer, and Mega 97.9 FM DJ Alex Sensation plus surprise guests. The festival will celebrate Latino arts and culture with a wide array of fun family-oriented activities, including live music and entertainment, free health screenings, raffles, arts and crafts, inflatable bouncers, and sports for children, as well as voter registration efforts, and more.
August 13: South Ward Music Festival
As part of Newark 350 activities, the second annual South Ward Music Festival brings a great line-up of Gospel Music and House Music DJ's. Get details and see line-up here.
August 13: Newark Kids Rock
It's all about Newark Kids... Lincoln Park will be turned into a kids zone with food, music/entertainment, games and activities and so much more.
August 15-20: Newark's Harvest
Newark Science and Sustainability, Inc and a dozen farms have collaborated to showcase urban farming and gardening in Newark. The weeklong celebration includes pop-up farmstands at Harvest Table, and unique events like drum circle, workshops and open mic; plus harvesting and tours at local urban farms. August 20: Newark Comic Con
Coming back for it's second year... Newark Comic Con has grown with too many activities to list. Organized by Newarker, Mark Boulding, the event includes celebrity signings, co-splay contest, musical guests, vendors, artists and sooo much more. See the list of activities and buy your ticket now.
August 20: Slide the City
The largest slip n' slide is coming downtown to Warren Street. Buy a ticket to go down the slide and enjoy a day of festivities with vendors, DJ/music and more. More here.
August 25: Bilal at Sounds of the City
Sounds of the City continue Thursdays all month concluding with Bilal! One of the most eclectic of R&B vocal artists, Philly-born Bilal draws his inspirations from gospel, jazz, soul, blues and hip-hop. As always admission is free! August 27: Dine en Blanc
And last but not least, August ends with an All-White Pop-Up Dinner benefiting the Believe in Newark foundation. Following the lead of Paris, Philly, New York and Boston hosting Dine en Blanc events, Newark will have it's first unique dinner experience. A ticket is $35 and the organizers supplie tables and chairs. You, dressed all in white, must bring food, table cloths and decoration and setting. It's at a secret location until about 2 hours prior to the event when they send an email with the location revealed. At the end of the night all is taken away with no trace left behind. Be a part of this first time experience.
