City is Hiring Summer Lifeguards Immediately

Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Department of Recreation, Cultural, and Senior Services Director Patrick Council announced today that the Division of Recreation is recruiting American Red Cross-certified life guards for immediate employment. These seasonal jobs begin Monday, June 19, and end Tuesday, September 5. Lifeguards will work up to 70 hours per week, with wages comparable to any in the State, at one of the six swimming pools located throughout the city.

“We want our residents of all ages to enjoy a safe, cool summer at our recreation centers,” said Mayor Baraka. “That means we need skilled lifeguards to keep our children and citizens safe.”

All persons interested in these positions should apply at the Division of Recreation’s Central Office, located at 94 William Street, 2nd Floor, in downtown Newark, between the hours of 9:00 am – 5:00 pm on weekdays. Prospective applicants can contact the office at (973) 733-6454.

There will be a Lifeguard Orientation meeting held on Saturday, June 17, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to Noon for those applicants who are selected to work.  Lifeguards who are selected are to report for orientation to the John F. Kennedy Aquatic Center, 211 West Kinney Street, the entrance to which is on Howard Street. A water skills test will be administered. As part of their preparations, selected applicants must bring full swim gear.

The summer recreation programs are sponsored by the Department of Recreation, Cultural, and Senior Services. For more information, contact the department at (973) 733-5373. For information about any City of Newark program or policy, contact the Non-Emergency Call Center at (973) 733-4311.
