Da Brick signed on by HBO
Spike Lee + Mike Tyson + Doug Ellin (Entourage) + Newark, NJ = Da Brick. Da Brick is going to be set in current-day Newark, New Jersey and is described as "a contemporary exploration of what it means to be a young, black man in supposedly post-racial America and is loosely inspired by aspects of Mike Tyson's youth."
Doug Ellin says of Da Brick - "The initial idea was "˜Entourage meets The Wire"˜, an edgy story about an up-and-coming boxer and his crew that is much more dramatic than Entourage."
Ellin (Entourage) and Spike Lee (When the Levees Broke) have a history with HBO, who picked up the show, and Tyson appeared in 2010 episode of Entourage where the idea started. Ellin will develop and produce it with Lee directing.
Supposedly HBO has recently hired a casting director to find the lead that has talent in the ring. Hopefully we'll be able to witness some sightings if they actually film in town.
