Donna Johnson Memorial Scholarship

The deadline for Donna Johnson Memorial Scholarship is next week, June 1. The scholarship is established by former mayoral candidate, Shavar Jeffries. Donna Johnson was a victim of domestic violence and was killed by her husband after she sought to flee from his abuse.

The scholarship is for a young person who has experienced the loss of a parent, guardian or loved one because of domestic violence or whose life has otherwise been touched by violence against women.

Eligibility and Requirements:
- High School senior or high school graduate entering college in the Fall of 2015
- Resident of Essex County, New Jersey
- High School transcript verifying a 2.5 GPA or better
- Exhibit passion around community service, ideally within the domestic violence arena through documented community service and volunteerism efforts
- Submit an essay (minimum 500 words but not to exceed 1000 words) describing how the applicant has overcome challenges presented as a result of their experience with domestic violence
