Donna T. Darrien Memorial Foundation
Donna T. Darrien died at the young age of twenty-three as a consequence of Sickle Cell Disease in 1997. Donna was born and raised in Newark, attended Queen of Angels grammar school and coached the girls basketball team. She was an aspiring engineering student and a leader in her community.
In 1999, Donna's family started the Donna T. Darrien Memorial Foundation for Sickle Cell because it was apparent to her mother that too few knew about the disease and its affect on families. Several family members and friends organized to educate the general public about this devastating disease and promote finding a universal cure.
They are hosting their 10th Walk for Sickle Cell on Saturday September 17, 2011 in Weequahic Park. The walk is approximately 2.2 miles or once around the lake.
Registration is from 8:30 am until 10:00 am
Rain or Shine the walk starts at 10:00 am

What is Sickle Cell Disease?
It is a genetic blood disorder, characterized by red blood cells that assume an abnormal rigid, sickle shape. The shape of the cells obstruct blood flow to organs causing pain and damange.
