Fall 2012 Recreational Classes
Rec Center Fall Programs are free - the classes include: Tumbling, Soul Line Dancing, Double Dutch, and Chess classes at all five recreation centers.
Tumbling: The SHINE Tumbling program for youth aged 7-17, taught by World Tumbling Champion and North Ward native Rayshine Harris, will begin on Wednesday, October 3, at the John F. Kennedy Recreation Center. Held on Wednesdays and Fridays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays from Noon to 2 p.m., teaching basic and advanced tumbling. Pre-Registration is required.
Soul Line Dancing: Classes teach dances such as the Wobble Baby, Ms. Jodi's Thang, Baltimore, several "Slides," and more advanced dances like the CC Rider, Wonderful, Chillin', and Hoodwalk. Classes for all ages, and will be held starting Wednesday, October 3, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at John F. Kennedy Recreation Center and at Boylan Recreation Center from 12 noon to 1:30 pm. Registration is required.
Double-Dutch Demonstration Team: The Demonstration Double-Dutch team is for the more advanced jumpers who will represent the City of Newark and the Division of Recreation and Cultural Affairs at special events, programs, and functions. Practices will begin on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, continuing on Tuesdays and Fridays, between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., at John F. Kennedy Recreation Center.
Chess: Newark youth can learn winning chess moves starting Wednesday, October 10, through Wednesday, December 12, every Wednesday, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Ironbound Recreation Center.
Note that the City's truancy ordinances require children to be in school during school hours.
