Free Electronic Recycling

Free Electronic Recycling

A free Electronic Collection event for Newark residents and businesses will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2012 from 6:00 am till 6:00 pm at Peter Francisco Park, located between Edison Place and Ferry Street in Newark's Ironbound District (Rain or Shine). The event is being hosted by the Ironbound Business Improvement District (IBID) and ECOvanta in cooperation with the City of Newark.

Electronic products including computers, cell phones, CD players, cameras, office machines, electronic games and more are made of a wide variety of materials that can negatively impact human health and the environment. Keeping material constituents like lead, nickel, cadmium and mercury out of your regular garbage by recycling electronics also recovers valuable materials in addition to helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution, saving energy and natural resources by extracting fewer raw materials from the earth.

Acceptable items include: computers, laptops, monitors, mice, keyboards, peripherals, CD/VCR/DVD players, cell phones, small office copiers/fax machines, MP3 players, photo/video cameras, tvs, radios/stereos, and electronic toys.

Prohibited items include hazardous wastes/liquids, loose batteries, toner cartridges, fluorescent lamps, and common electrical appliances like washers, dryers, stoves, air conditioners, refrigerators, microwave ovens and space heaters.

As a general safety precaution, make sure information in data storage devices such as computers, smart phones, copiers, etc. is completely removed prior to donation or recycling. Neither the IBID or ECOvanta will refurbish or resell any of the collected items. All hard drives and data storage media from this collection will be shredded at ECOvanta's electronic waste processing facility located in Philadelphia, PA. If you have questions about specific items, notify Seth Grossman via email: Nwkibid@aol.com
