Today starts Newark Now's 9th year of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program - the largest in New Jersey. VITA helps low-income working families access the Earned Income Tax Credit, which is one of the most significant anti-poverty programs in the United States.In 2011, Newark Now's VITA program:
* Certified 69 volunteers to become certified tax preparers
* Operated 6 full-time and 8 mobile tax sites
* Prepared over 4,000 tax returns
* Returned $6.9 million in refunds to tax filers
* Saved $700,000 in filing fees
* Over 350 bank accounts opened for tax filers
* Assisted over 400 students with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid

In addition to assisting members of the community with their income tax preparation, the VITA program at Newark Now connects people with many different asset-building opportunities. This includes: financial education and counseling; legal counseling; assistance with college access; accelerated savings programs; benefits screening; and obtaining free or discounted prescription drugs.
