Free Web Development Training
The CIty of Newark announced that a Free “Art (of) Code” web development training program, beginning on Thursday, September 10, at 10 a.m., in 990 Broad Street, Room 7. The 12-week program is FREE to Newark residents, and will teach participants JavaScript and modern software development techniques. The program will also include classes designed to support participants’ job searches, with lessons on interview preparation, how to succeed in written and oral exams, and mock interviews. The program is aimed at youth who are not enrolled in school or out of schools, or adults who are unemployed and receiving benefits or low-income.
“Computer technology and design are among the rapidly expanding job and career fields of the present and future,” Mayor Baraka said. “This free class will enable many underserved and at-risk residents to transform their lives – and thus our City – into a life of prosperity and empowerment. I commend the NWIB and NewarkWorks on developing this program and urge all eligible Newark residents to participate in it.”
Requirements to take the class are as follows:
- Be a Newark resident and U.S. citizen
- Pass an 8th grade math and reading skills test
- Youth: 18-24 years old, not enrolled OR out-of-school
- Adults: Unemployed, receiving benefits, OR low-income
The program consists of the following:
- Two-four weeks of pre-work exercises, including a brief personal essay
- 12 weeks of coursework – every Monday and Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., for a total of 144 hours of instruction
- Homework assignments, periodic quizzes, and tests on coursework
Participants will be issued laptop computers upon which to do their assignments. Those who graduate the class will be allowed to keep them.
This is a partnership between the City, the Newark Workforce Investment Board (NWIB) and NewarkWorks.
