Giving Tuesday 2013

Giving Tuesday 2013

Today, December 3, is #GivingTuesday. A national movement dedicated to giving, similar to how Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday are days that are synonymous with shopping. It is an effort of charities, families, businesses and individuals"”to transform how people think about, talk about, and participate in the giving season. #GivingTuesday will inspire people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they support and help create a better world. New York's 92nd Street Y has been the catalyst and incubator for #GivingTuesday and the United Nations Foundation joined as a partner to bring strategic clout to the project.

Below are some of the organizations in Newark participating in #Giving Tuesday.

Archdiocese of Newark
www.rcanaaa.org
The Archdiocese of Newark is encouraging others to volunteer, pray, evangelize, donate. Employees of the Archdiocese will lead by example- such as organizing a drive to collect nonperishable and toiletry items for our homeless shelters. We will collect Bibles from parishioners for the Gratia Plena Evangelical Community, a Catholic Community in residence at St. Antoninus Church in Newark. They share the Gospel in word and deed, especially outside the Church - in nursing homes, on the street and short-term mission outings in Newark. Also, a gift to the Archbishop's Annual Appeal provides an opportunity to support those in need throughout our four counties of Bergen, Essex, Hudson and Union. Your donation helps sustain vital ministries and programs, such as Catholic Charities and Youth Ministry.

To help us extend our growing season and produce seeds for upcoming seasons we are building a "hoop house". Please help us raise the funds to build and support our hoop house!

GlassRoots

Help us keep Newark young people meaningfully engaged during the summer! GlassRoots' Summer Internship Program is an opportunity for local high school students to create, learn, and grow intellectually, socially and emotionally. We use the power of art to coach, teach and inspire youth to recognize their potential and realize their dreams. Students gain an understanding of the diversity and opportunities within the art field. The skills learned are supplemented with field trips to museums and opportunities to interact with professional artists. GlassRoots Summer Interns are selected through partnerships with municipal and nonprofit summer work programs. #GivingTuesday will kick off the funding drive for this important program with goal of $32,697.00!

The generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations makes everything they do possible and enables New Jerseyans throughout the state to experience the NJSO and live music each year. In addition to its lauded artistic programming, the NJSO presents a suite of education and community engagement programs that promote meaningful, lifelong engagement with live music. Programs include the three-ensemble Greater Newark Youth Orchestras, school-time Concerts for Young People performances and multiple initiatives that provide and promote in-school instrumental instruction. The NJSO's Resources for Education and Community Harmony (REACH) chamber music program annually brings original programs"”designed and performed by NJSO musicians"”to a variety of settings, reaching as many as 17,000 people in nearly all of New Jersey's 21 counties. As part of the Giving Tuesday movement, the NJSO appeals for support through an online campaign that invites donors to share their personal statements about why they give, and that shows the direct impact of those donations.

NJ Tree Foundation
www.njtreefoundation.org
The NJ Tree Foundation joined the #GivingTuesday movement to remind people to go green around the holiday season. The NJ Tree Foundation is a nonprofit organization that works statewide to plant trees in urban communities and provides transitional, green jobs for men reentering society after time in correctional facilities. In 2013, the NJ Tree Foundation has planted nearly 23,000 trees throughout New Jersey. More than 2,000 of these trees were planted in coastal communities still recovering from Hurricane Sandy. Many were also planted in Camden and Newark, where large trees (more than 10' tall) are planted to improve the environment and quality of life. The NJ Tree Foundation will use donations raised on #GivingTuesday to continue planting efforts in New Jersey, including reforesting after Hurricane Sandy and providing free trees to low-income New Jersey residents. - http://njtreefoundation.org/donate/online-giving/
