Green Month 2013: Tree Planting
Happy Arbor Day (Month)! Thanks to the New Jersey the Tree Foundation we'll be seeing a lot of new trees in Newark.On Tuesday April 9th, 150 new trees were planted at Weequahic Park funded by a grant through the USDA Forest Service. Tree species being planted include White Oak, Tulip Poplar, Willow Oak, Red Maple, Elm, Bombardy Poplar, Gray Birch, White Ash, Bayberry, Lilac, Redbud, Dogwood and Hedge Maple.
Today, 31 trees are being planted at Rutgers-Newark near University Avenue, between Bleeker and Warren Street and next month there are three more locations to get new trees. Volunteers are also needed (email Elena at elopez@njtreefoundation.org).
May 10th - Newark Greater Charter School Community Garden from 9am-12pm
(no volunteers needed).
May 18th - Bruen Street Neighborhood from 9am-12pm
volunteers needed for 15-20 trees
May 25th - Forrest Hill Community Association from 9am-12pm
volunteers needed for 20-30 trees
May 31st - First Tabernacle & Peshine Avenue School
volunteers needed for 18 trees
