Have you met GAIN?

Five nonprofit organizations representing a cross section of charitable causes have joined together with the intention to unite individuals and businesses on a mission to embrace charitable acts of giving for the betterment of the Newark community. The five organizations are: Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art, Greater Newark Conservancy, Independence: A Family of Services, La Casa de Don Pedro and Newark Pride are seeking your support of Newark’s #GivingTuesday celebration called GAIN-Newark: Giving and Inspiring Newark.  Visit www.newarkgives.org.

#GivingTuesday is a national movement that celebrates charitable activities at the start of the holiday season. In 2014, the initiative gained the support of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who officially proclaimed the day as Giving Tuesday throughout the city. This year, the GAIN-Newark coalition hopes to grow Newark’s #GivingTuesday movement from a small project to a critical mass to help change the way Newark and its stakeholders think about philanthropy and community service for generations to come.

Robin Dougherty, Executive Director of Greater Newark Conservancy, noted that the five nonprofit members of GAIN-Newark have a shared average of 31 years experience serving the needs of the Newark community and provide approximately 75,000 Newark residents annually with vitally important family support, job and housing counseling, environmental education, cultural enrichment, health education and services for the LGBTQ community. “In previous years, the Conservancy has worked with Whole Foods who donated 5% of its pretax sales at selected stores to support our programs and services, and we encourage other businesses to consider a similar Give & GAIN Day,” Dougherty stated.

GIVE & GAIN DAYS

“Give & GAIN days offer an opportunity for businesses to support the cause and attract new customers.  We will help interested parties come up with an appealing way to help promote their contributions (i.e. Taco Tuesdays or Wednesday Wine & Dine),” concluded Carrie Puglisi, Director of Program & Fund Development at La Casa de Don Pedro. “We will help you promote your 100% tax free contribution to GAIN-Newark or to one or more specific nonprofits in our group through our website (www.newarkgives.org), each partner’s website, through media outreach, email blasts and social media posts.”

Chipotle Grill at 222 Market Street, Newark has already pledged to support GAIN. On December 1st from 4pm to 8:30pm, 50% of their sales will support the cause.
