Hug the Block 2012
This Sunday, December 2nd, is Hug The Block - an attempt to do the largest unity circle to set the Guinness World Record. The unity circle will start at the Boys & Girls Club on Avon Ave and go around to Irvine Turner Blvd., Muhammad Ali Avenue and to Somerset Street.Hug the Block is the idea of Margie (Mia X) Johnson who has lived and worked in this neighborhood for over 20 years. Margie is an art coordinator at the Boys & Girls Club and therefore has made both art and the Club a part of the circle. Margie says, "Being an artist and community member I felt it was my duty to plant seeds of love, hope and creativity and also engage and connect with my neighbors...especially the children."
According to Margie, People in the neighborhood speak about negative happenings like who was shot or robbed, yet don't know about open mic, artistis events and the many galleries of Newark - happening here in our backyard. So Margie took it into her own hands and is bringing the gallery/show to the block. The event not only is about the largest unity circle, but will have visual art, poetry, music, dancers and more.
The event is being held on December 2nd, the death anniversary of Margie's mom. She is remembered as the "candy lady" who sold candy on the block and gave encouragement and love to all in this neighborhood.
These blocks are long - so come out and support Hug The Block and truly show unity in the community. Unity Circle to be created and formed at 3pm so come early and enjoy the show.
