Ironbound of the 70s
My photographs of the Ironbound were made during a five-year period (1976-1980). They represent a very personal view of the city. To me, the photographs of the Ironbound do more than document a neighborhood. They are about the people and how they relate to their environment. They are about the people that make the Ironbound what it is today- they are the real subjects of this series of photographs.
In 1978, the photographs were exhibited in a one-person exhibition at the Newark Museum entitled "Ironbound: Newark, New Jersey- An Urban Portrait." Now the black and white photographs are 34 years old, and with the passage of time, they also show a nostalgic look back to the history of the neighborhood.
