Lifeguard Training Course Deadline May 14

The City of Newark is offering a six-day Lifeguard Training class, beginning on Monday, May 19, 2014, continuing through Saturday, May 24, 2014, at the Ironbound Aquatic Center, located at 226 Rome Street, in the City's East Ward. This class is only open to Newark residents aged 15 years and older. Space is limited, so early registration is required. Deadline to register is Wednesday, May 14.

American Red Cross-certified Lifeguard Instructors will teach the class. There is a $50 non-refundable initial cost due on the first day of class. The classes will take place as follows:

- Monday, May 19: 4:30pm to 9pm
- Tuesday, May 20: 4:30pm to 9pm
- Wednesday, May 21: 4:30pm to 9pm
- Thursday, May 22: 4:30pm to 9pm
- Friday, May 23: 4:30pm to 9pm
- Saturday, May 24: 9am to 2pm

Participants must pre-register by calling the Division at (973) 733-6454 or (973) 715-2856, or calling the Non-Emergency Call Center at (973) 733-4311.

Participants must present a valid photo ID and proof of Newark residency when they sign up (ID, report card, utility bill, etc). Participants must be on time and participate in all class sessions. They must also demonstrate competency in all skills/activities, complete final rescue skill scenarios and pass all exams with a minimum grade of 80 percent.

The course will require participants to swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing, using the front crawl, breast stroke, or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Participants must also tread water for two minutes, using only the legs, complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds, and surface dive, feet or head first to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Participants must bring swimwear, cap, and a towel, to all classes.
