Meet: Newark’s Circle of Sisters

Meet: Newark’s Circle of Sisters

Newark, there is a mighty powerful group of women coming together through purpose in our city, and you should put us on your radar, the Newark Circle of Sisters. From service, to social media, to scholarship - we have committed ourselves to the collective. Our Motto: Giving Back To Our City, What We Have Received.

The Newark Circle of Sisters (NCOS) was founded in April of 2013, with the goal to bring the women of Newark who give through service to the city, together via social media. As founders DeNiqua Matias and Kaleena Berryman were planning the Women on Fire event last year, there were so many names of women submitted for honor that we were not familiar with. As we researched these women and learned of their great commitment to the city of Newark in the areas of social service, health, education, arts, politics and entrepreneurship, it was clear that a greater effort needed to be made to create a space where all of us can get to know one another, support one another, and empower each other's work.

NCOS women give to this city with persistence, dedication and a love that is unparalleled. Our work covers the five wards and many different areas of service - social services, the arts, education, health care, housing, and politics just to name a few. However, our work is often done in silos, and that limits our reach and impact. NCOS seeks to expand both through activating the power of women in this city to support and promote one another.

The closed group is by invitation or request, but they also have a Facebook Page where we share important news with the larger community.
