New Bike Lane
Washington Street has the city's first-ever bicycle lane downtown for an eight-block section from Raymond Blvd to Broad Street. The route runs by Rutgers-Newark, the Newark Museum, the Newark Public Library, and Washington Park. The City will construct six more bike lanes around Newark, which are scheduled to be opened by December of this year.
The bike lane consists of a green textured pavement, with signs, pavement markings, and high-visibility stamped crosswalks to create a safer environment for pedestrians. The high-friction surfacing material, called "Safe-T-Grip" was also recently used on bus lanes along Raymond Boulevard between McCarter Highway and Raymond Plaza East. The project was a partnership between Rutgers-Newark and the Department of Engineering. The university funded the design, while the City funded the construction work. The cost of the project was $100,000, from the Department's Capital Budget.
The other streets that will receive bicycle lanes are as follows:
- Mt. Prospect Avenue between City Line and Heller Parkway
- Irvine Turner Boulevard between Clinton Avenue and Springfield Avenue
- Jones Street between Springfield Avenue and South Orange Avenue
- Norfolk Street between South Orange Avenue and West Market Street
- Clifton Avenue between Orange Street and Victoria Avenue
- First Street between West Market Street and Sussex Avenue
