New Bulk Trash Ordinance starts October 1 (2016)

Department of Public Works announced that starting on October 1, the City of Newark will begin enforcing a new Municipal Ordinance that will limit bulk trash pick-ups to 10 items on Bulk Collection days.

Bulk items in excess of 10 will not be picked up by the City’s Division of Sanitation. Residents and property owners must contract with a private hauler to have excess items removed. Any person, firm, corporation, or entity that violates, fails or neglects to comply with the provisions of this ordinance, shall be punishable upon conviction by a fine or penalty. Residents and property owners who leave out excess bulk trash that is not removed can face fines of up to $250 for each item left out, which will escalate for every day the bulk trash remains uncollected.

Bulk trash consists of household items that include couches, tables, chairs, mattresses, dressers, closets, rugs, exercise equipment and vanities. Items that cannot be included for bulk pickup include doors, windows, televisions, concrete, rocks, dirt, sheetrock, paint, drywall, roofing tiles and shingles, glass, automotive parts, engines, auto transmissions, bumpers, tires, or any construction debris.
