New Group: Newark Mommies

With Mother's Day just two days away (reminder for those that have forgotten) we figured it was a great time to showcase a new group in town, Newark Mommies. Newark Mommies is a group for women (daddies are welcome) in Newark or those that don't mind coming to Newark. They currently use a facebook group to ask questions, to gather off-line for playdates, to meet at community events and more.

The group is lead by Newarkers, Tamara Remedios and Endelea Meadows. Both of them entered their new roles as mommies at the same time and last year realized the need for play groups for their children without having to travel to the suburbs. One of the moms, Marie Reedell sums it up best, "It's crazy that I live in the largest city in New Jersey, yet, when I became a mom, I felt so alone. Newark Mommies helped connect me with a new community relevant to my new life."

The group currently has about 50 "members" from every background, age and area of the city. Most of the kids are under the age of 3, but the group is open to all. Newark Mommies has been instrumental in getting the downtown YMCA location to bring back their "Baby & Me" swim classes (only $5 and no membership required), helping businesses attract children and families by hosting intro sessions, and even getting parks and recreation planners to think of more children's activities.

What's to come in the future? A babysitting co-op is in the works and possibly some bigger events.
