New Weekly Festival starts Sunday in Ironbound
This Sunday, Newark gets a new street festival weekly from April 19 through October 25, every Sunday from 10am-4pm in the Ironbound. It's a cultural festival called "Sunday of the Nations" and will take place around Peter Francisco Park, in front of Penn Station. It is created by two Newarkers, Flavio Murillo and Sonia Valias, who had the vision 8 years ago and everything came into alignment for this year.
The festival will have authentic multi-cultural food, artisans and crafts, performances, capoeira, music and more. They have about 30 vendors for this first weekend, mainly Portuguese, Brazilian and Spanish, but look to grow the event in size and diversity as the weeks continue.
They will also have unique weekly activities to cater to the diversity of Newark and host a mix of events like: antique car show, fashion show, art showcase, and a bake-off between local bakers.
The City of Newark and Mayor Baraka are supporting their endeavors by easing permit processes and helping where they can.
