Newark Chess Club Program

Newark Chess Club Program

The Newark Chess Club, in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Newark, has kicked off The Newark Chess Club Mentorship Program! They are still accepting applications from Mentors and Middle-Schoolers! They also are in need of volunteers with various levels of involvement including chaperones, aides, & instructors.

The FREE Newark Chess Club Mentorship Program aims to teach Newark Middle-Schoolers: 1) the game of chess, and 2) life skills through the game. Their experience in various Newark high schools has proven promising. Young people love playing and learning alongside mentors, as the program fosters a space for fun, structure, learning, and development of life skills. This cycle, we are working with the Boys & Girls Club of Newark to kick off a new program tailored for Newark Middle-Schoolers.

WHEN: every Saturday through June 9th, from 10am - 1pm. Mentors are welcome to join us for the full session, but at a minimum commit for the 11am-to-noon one-on-one component.

WHERE: The Boys & Girls Club of Newark, 1 Avon Avenue, Newark NJ

WHAT TO EXPECT: Basic breakfast; Professional group chess lesson for youth-participants; One-on-one chess play with mentors; Lunch with Guest Speaker; Open youth chess-play. We will also be taking approximately six field trips to educational and fun sites, such as the Liberty Science Center (Jersey City), the Museum of Natural History (NYC), and the U.S. Chess Center (Washington, DC).

Youth-participants not only learn how to play chess, but learn life skills through the game. Studies show that chess improves aptitude, cognition, decision-making, strategy, planning, and focus.
