Newark Made: No Boni
Talented Newark-based film-maker, Dubois Ashong, together with his collective, Mindframe Filmworks, recently completed a new short film, No Boni. The film is a sci-fi imagining of the reparations debate. The script tells the story of a test subject, who is given a classified pill that takes it used on a mind bending journey through their personal ancestral history, in search of key answers to the future's questions. The film stars several Newarkers, many of whom are artists, activists, and entrepreneurs, including Kaylan Jones, LNY, Terence Grimsley, and Pierre Coleman. The film's original score was created by Melvin Jones Jr., a frequent contributor with the filmmaker, Ashong.
The film is celebrating its opening debut tomorrow (Saturday, March 28), at Jersey City Museum, from 1-4. The free event will feature a screening of another Ashong film, The Gantalist Documentary, which is about famed artist and Newarker, Jerry Gant, along with a DJ set by DJ Mello Mel (the aforementioned Mr. Jones). We will keep you posted for screenings in Newark.
