National Night Out
Today is the "National Night Out Against Crime" - It is designed to generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. Festivities will be at Kasberger Field, at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and North 5th Street, in Newark's West Ward from 2-10pm. The annual event will begin with a softball game between the Newark Police Department and the Newark Fire Department, followed by a game between the Police Department and the Essex County Sheriff's Office.Open to the public, the event includes music, bouncy rides, a dunk tank, and other activities for kids and adults. Batman and his Batmobile, McGruff the Crime Dog, and Sparky the Fire Dog will make appearances. The Police Department will display their Emergency Services Unit and its equipment, police horses, motorcycles, the police boat, bomb truck, Segway device, and their command post vehicle. In addition, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey will provide free health screenings for residents.

Newark Night Out is a coordinated effort at 13 locations through 15+ ministries within Newark - spearheaded by a coalition of businesses, non-profits, community agencies and churches to seek peace, righteousness and joy in every aspect of life in Newark.
