POETRY/SPOKEN WORD

The HooFeRzCLuB School for Tap | 131 Brunswick Street | Friday, Oct. 11: 5-8:30pm
Join Hip Hop enthusiast, historian, and arts educator Mikumari Caiyhe along with others for an energetic course in Spoken Word and performance poetry. The evening sessions culminate in an open floor style portion where artists can perform their own creative works. $25 per person for both sessions.

Poetry in Practice: The Art of Sustaining a Life in Poetry | Sumei | Saturday, Oct. 12: 7-9pm
Presented by the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Program and featuring Dodge Poets.

Before I Die...Newark: A Gathering of Voices | 85 Market St | Saturday, Oct. 19: 5-8pm
Culminating live performances and poetry reading drawn from the week-long public art project with poets Vincent Toro and Gretna Wilkinson along with Newark residents. Presented by Dodge Poetry Program, Gallery Aferro, and Newark Arts Council.

 

FILM

George Tice: Seeing Beyond the Moment | Newark Museum | Sunday, Oct. 13: 2-3:30pm
Taking place on George Tice's birthday, the Newark Museum is proud to host the world premiere of this documentary film by Bruce Wodder, Peter Bosco and Douglas Underdahl.

Screening: Missing | Firestation Arts Center | Sunday, Oct. 13: 2-6pm
30-minute film about fatherless African American males, how they cope, and one young man's journey. Panel discussion following the film.

No More Stigma Film Series | 260 Washington Street | Saturday, Oct. 19: 6-11pm
Stigmata concludes with an evening of art, film and conversation featuring the No More Stigma Film Series' presentation of You Are Not Alone (Depressed Black Gay Men) by Antoine Craigwell. UNIQUE PERFORMANCES

Limited, Limited Edition: A Performance by Akiko Ichikawa| Aljira | Friday, Oct. 11: 1-6pm
Akiko translates various message t-shirts she sees and converts the language into Japanese text, gifting the shirts to audience members.

Making the World's Largest Monotype Print! | Washington Park/Place | Saturday, Oct. 12: 1-4pm
Come one, come all! Join artists and community members in breaking the world record by creating the world's largest monotype print. Free and open to the public. More here.
