Red Light Cameras
July Update:All red light cameras are back in operation.
June 19 Update:
Today the Department of Transportation announced that 63 of the 85 red light cameras in the state "” including all 19 in Newark "” have not been tested to ensure yellow lights were timed in accordance with state standards. That is the yellow lights are expected to stay lit one second for every 10 mph "” so 3.5 seconds for an intersection where the speed limit is 35 mph.
--------------------------------------------------
Although the city says the Red Light cameras were created for the "critical purpose of increasing pedestrian and motor safety at our busiest intersections" it's hard to not realize the increased revenues that come from it. I know I've deposited a few hundred dollars into that pot.
The type of violation issued is similar to one for running a red light captured by a police officer on the street, with the exception that no points will be assigned against the driver or the owner of the vehicle. The automated cameras snap photographs of license plates of vehicles that run red lights, which will result in the owners of the vehicles being mailed a ticket for the violation. Violators can view the digital still images and a 12-second video of the violation online.
In 2009, the city started "Project Red Light" on Broad and Raymond. Below is a map and list of pending and active intersections with red light cameras.
