Reyna Run 2012
The Claudio Reyna Foundation is hosting a 5K race on September 16 starting at 9:30am that will send runners on a path through Newark and Harrison to benefit the development of youth in urban communities. The race will start at St. Benedict's, bring the runners past City Hall, through Newark's Ironbound via Ferry St. and across the Jackson St. bridge before the race concludes at Red Bull Arena. More information about the race, including a detailed route and list of the supporting business and area landmarks can be found at www.reynarun.com.The Claudio Reyna Foundation will include a pre-race ceremony that includes Newark's Mayor Cory Booker, featured as an official race starter, and other VIPs from the City of Newark to honor members of the St. Benedict's Preparatory School National Championship-winning soccer team. Celebrity runners include Claudio Reyna, Grant Wahl (Sports Illustrated senior writer and NY Times best-selling author), Jeff Agoos (Former US Men's National Team member and MLS Defender of the Year), and Kristine Lilly (former US Women's National Team member who had more appearances for her country than any soccer player in history).
Free t-shirt by Nike for the first 200 kids that register, and free t-shirt for the first 250 adults that register. There are three different "events" that are free for kids under 19 years of age:
- 5k run - starts at 9:30am
- 1 mile walk - for everyone who wants to participate - starts at 9:50am
- Kid's Mad Dash - a quick sprint for those younger participants - starts at 10:30am
The Claudio Reyna Foundation started in 2008, with 2 locations serving 68 kids. They have since grown to 40 locations serving almost 2,000 children in the NY/NJ area. This is the first year they are doing a 5K/mile walk/kids dash with plans to make it an annual event. They run after-school and in-school programs in Newark, using soccer as a tool to get children focused on proper nutrition, healthy/active lifestyles, and their education - battling the epidemic of childhood obesity and the cycle of poverty. Their programs have become an alternative to gangs and the dangers of idle time. All programs are free of charge. They work closely with several North Star Academies, St Mary's School, St. Benedict's Prep, La Casa de Don Pedro, Branch Brook Elementary School, the Avon Ave School and NJIT, who generously donates field time for kids in our programs.
