Robeson: The Opera Preview Saturday

This Saturday, August 3 will debut the first opera ever on Paul Robeson. The production of "Robeson:The Opera" represents a monumental milestone for Trilogy as it celebrates its 10th anniversary in existence.

The new opera, written by famed composer Adolphus Hailstork, with libretto by award winning director and playwright Shauneille Perry, is based on the life of New Jersey native and Rutgers University graduate Paul Robeson (1898 - 1976). Paul Robeson was the epitome of the 20th century Renaissance man. His immense talents as a scholar, athlete, singer, actor and civil rights activist made him a revered man of his time, yet he has been all but erased from popular history because of his political beliefs.

The title role will be sung by leading American Basso Kevin Maynor, international opera singer and Artistic Director of Trilogy. The opera will feature seven characters supported by orchestra, chorus and ballet including: stage and HBO star, Anthony Chisholm as narrator; rising American soprano Manna KnJoi as Robeson's wife Eslanda (Essie); Metropolitan Opera Auditions winner, tenor Chase Taylor will sing the role of Ben (Paul's brother); and baritone Raemond Martin will sing the role of Rev. Robeson (Paul's father). Russian soprano Ekaterina Kim will also be featured.

Four areas important to the understanding and work of Paul Robeson provide the setting for the opera: The Theater, The Church, The Ballroom, and The U.S. Senate, highlighting the significance of these places in Robeson's quest to gain respect for he and his people.

In addition to the August 3, 2013 preview performance at Central Theater (246 18th Ave., Newark), the schedule includes excerpts of the opera performed at NJPAC on November 3, 2013 and the world premier of "Robeson: The Opera" which is scheduled for spring 2014 (NJPAC).
