School Stadium Opens

Today (Friday, September 9) city officials and new superintendent Cami Anderson officially open the newly renovated Newark Schools Stadium. This state of the art facility was funded by the City of Newark through a capital bond and will be operated by the Newark Public Schools. The stadium is a certified track and field facility and will serve as the home field for Barringer High School's football and soccer teams and other Newark Public Schools. Moreover, local little league baseball, pop warner and youth soccer will have access to stadium.

The original Schools Stadium was built in 1925 and through the years used for local Newark football team the Tornados, high school football, American Soccer Club the Newark Ukranian Sich and more. During the 1967 riots, the stadium was the staging area for the NJ National Guard. After years of neglect the stadium deteriorated and finally in 2009 the City announced it would be demolished and replaced with a new stadium.

School Stadium is located at 450 Bloomfield Avenue in the North Ward
