Soul Food Junkies is a documentary created by Byron Hurt. The premise is this: Baffled by his dad's unwillingness to change his traditional soul food diet in the face of a health crisis, Documentary Filmmaker Byron Hurt sets out to learn more about this rich culinary tradition. He discovers that the love affair that his community has with soul food is deep-rooted, complex, and in some tragic cases, deadly.
Byron Hurt is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, writer, and anti-sexist activist. Hurt is also the former host of the Emmy-nominated series, "REEL WORKS with BYRON HURT." His documentary, Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and broadcast nationally on PBS' Emmy-award winning series Independent Lens. Soul Food Junkies has already won Best Documentary at the American Black Film Festival and will air nationally on Independent Lens on PBS in January 2013.
Newark's own St. Philip's Academy appears in the film as a beacon of hope and awareness of healthy habits for the community. It is at St. Philip's Academy that they will be hosting a full-length screening on September 26th at 7pm followed by a Q&A with the Filmmaker.
