Shabazz becomes Academy of Sports Careers

Malcolm X Shabazz High School has redesigned their Pathway for School Year 2013-2014. Prior to the changes, the school's focus was centered around Career Technical Education such as Culinary Arts, Video Production, and Computerized Accounting. Due to the rich history of the school sports programs (see the football team featured on SI) and the impact it has had on the lives of current students, the school community decided that pathways which focused on Sports careers was fitting.

They have found that students are more productive and culturally connected to the school when they are working together for a common goal. Sports and careers in sports provides a platform for innovation which is needed to engage students academically.

Mr. Gemar Mills, Principal, decided not only to expand the High School's Athletic Program but to incorporate realistic careers for the students. Malcolm X Shabazz Academy of Sports & Careers will provide students with the beginning courses which will create a pathway for post-secondary choices when transitioning to college. The overall goal of the program is to engage students and expose them to a variety of careers and endless opportunities. Lastly, the school looks forward to partnering with local businesses in the City in order to provide valuable on-the-job experience as they explore career options.
