Slammetry Celebrates One Year

For the past year, Newark has been home to the longest running spoken word series in New Jersey - SLAMMETRY. With its inception in 2004, SLAMMETRY was the brainchild of nationally-acclaimed spoken word poet and Newark educator, Rob Hylton. Its purpose has always been two-fold; to showcase some of the country's most engaging and sought-after talents as well as to give emerging poets a home to develop their craft and push the limits of their writing and performance abilities. For just $10 ($5 with student ID) patrons have seen performances by poets who would have dominated the national stage such as Helena D. Lewis, Gemineye, Rico FDK, Taalam Acey, Jeannan Verlee, Omar Holmon, and many more.

SLAMMETRY is held every Friday at Art Kitchen hosted by veteran NJ poet, Starski. Showtime is 6pm and the show consists of a range of open mic, slam competitions, and feature performance. This friday, June 8th, SLAMMETRY celebrates its one-year anniversary at Art Kitchen with a line-up of poets who have been featured over the past year as well as a few surprises. You can find out more about the show by way of its host Starski who can be found on Facebook as Starski SpokenwordArtist and on Twitter @starskithepoet.
