Spotlight on Kanek
Photo above by Worxlife.comThere's no doubt the skateboard scene is becoming more and more a part of the Newark culture - with the Street League finals being hosted at the PruCenter two years in a row, Jon Lodge a Newarker helping create skate parks and events, and city-sponsored skateboard clinics. So the obvious next step was Kanek created by Corey Shomo (aka Premo).
Shop owner, Corey came to Newark when trying to find a quick commute into the city for his "corporate" job and decided to live in Eleven80, downtown. After being laid off he put together his savings to create Kanek. Kanek has created a skateboard movement downtown and it's evident after hours on Halsey Street with skateboarders taking over the quiet street and live bands performing on the weekends.
Kanek is more than just skateboards - it's a lifestyle destination. Kanek of course offers many of the big brands like Supra and NikeSB, but also supports New Jersey based brands like Worx Life (North Bergen) and Domestics (Carteret). The walls are offered up to local artists and after normal shop hours - Kanek is a performance space showcasing local bands and DJ's.
