St. Gerard’s Feast 2013
In celebration of Columbus Day - we think it's only fitting to ready ourselves for St. Lucy's Church's annual feast of St. Gerard Maiella. St. Lucy's located in the North ward on 7th Avenue, with the cathedral in the background, is actually the National Shrine of Saint Gerard.St. Lucy's has preserved many of the Italian immigrant traditions of the people that founded the parish in 1891. In 1899, a small group from Caposele, Italy introduced the City of Newark to the Feast of St. Gerard. In 1977, St. Gerard's chapel inside St. Lucy's was dedicated as a national shrine.
This year the church celebrates it's 114th year of the Feast from October 16th through 20th, 2013. The feast includes many masses, traditional lights, music, food stands and the street procession - all devoted to this Patron of Mothers.
