Summer 2012: Newark Black Film Festival

The Newark Black Film Festival, the longest running festival of its kind in the United States, kicks off its 38th season on June 20 at the Newark Museum with a documentary about acclaimed African artist El Anatsui. Youth Cinema, the accompanying summer-long series of free children's features and short films, debuts on July 9 at The Newark Public Library, and July 11 at the Museum.

The opening night screening of Fold, Crumple, Crush: The Art of El Anatsu, begins at 7 pm and will be followed by a reception and a discussion about the making of the film and the work of El Anatsui with filmmaker Susan Vogel and Museum Curator Christa Clark. The festival will continue with screenings every Wednesday through August 1. Screenings will take place at the Museum unless otherwise noted. Since its introduction by the Museum in 1974, NBFF has provided a forum for emerging writers, directors, producers, performers and patrons of black cinema.

Screenings are free but seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-registration is required for the opening night screening and reception of Fold, Crumple, Crush and can be made by phone at 973.596.6550 or email at rsvp@newarkmuseum.org.
