Summer 2013: Sounds of the City
Summer ain't summer until it's Sounds of the City time! Sounds of the City is the premiere outdoor music event of the summer happening Thursdays from 5-10pm. The concerts begin Thursday, July 11 and run until end of August.Here is the 2013 line-up:
July 11 - Felix Hernandez's Rhythm Revue
Now in its 27th year on the air in the metro, and still heard on its original station, WBGO-FM in Newark, Rhythm Revue is the live classic soul show heralded by New York magazine as the "Best Radio Show" in the Big Apple. Felix Hernandez dips into his impressive collection of R&B, soul, disco and funk music to ignite an evening of dance and groove.
July 18 - Naughty By Nature
Originally discovered by fellow Jerseyan Queen Latifah, the hip-hop trio reunites to perform their chart-topping singles, like the groundbreaking "O.P.P.," and tracks from their latest release, Anthem Inc. Treach, Vin Rock and DJ Kay Gee show why their successful mix of brashness and crossover appeal scored Grammy® and American Music Awards.
July 25 - Bernie Worrell Orchestra
Pioneering composer and keyboardist Bernie Worrell is back in his home state to lead a freewheeling program of hits from dozens of albums. A founding member of Parliament-Funkadelic, "The Wizard of WOO" is guaranteed to make magic with his amazing fusion of rock, funk and jazz.
August 1 - Sheila E.
Percussionist Sheila E. first picked up drumsticks as a toddler and has since been setting the beat for some of the industry's biggest pop stars. Acclaimed for her singing and songwriting talents, the former member of Prince's band presents selections from The Glamorous Life and other favorites in a dynamic solo performance.
August 8 - Shaggy
Hitmaker Shaggy has released a string of hot-selling albums, including Boombastic, winner of the Best Reggae Album award at the 1996 Grammys®. The singer-songwriter performs tracks from Intoxication, Summer in Kingston and other compilations when he brings tfoJhe get-up-and-shake-it sounds of his native Jamaica to NJPAC.
August 15 - Spanish Harlem Orchestra
Widely considered a standard bearer of contemporary Latin music, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra melds past tradition with a current vibe to create its enticing, spicy sound. Expect a formidable program of classic New York salsa, Cuban jazz and tropical tunes when the 13-member combo takes the outdoor stage.
August 22 - The Ohio Players
A smash of the Seventies, "Love Rollercoaster" put The Ohio Players on a trajectory to the Billboard charts, where their street funk and underground R&B were also heard on "Fire" and "Skin Tight." One of the busiest touring bands in the business, the nine musicians encourage enthusiastic dancing and singing to their supercool grooves.
August 29 - Richard Bona & Mandekan Cubano
Singer, composer, bass player and bandleader Richard Bona comes from a village in Cameroon but brings the world to audiences through his evocative music. The songs on his solo album Bonafied reference Latin jazz, tango, African pop and even Parisian cabaret. At NJPAC, he appears with the fiery Mandekan Cubano ensemble.
