Summer 2014: Sounds of the City
Sounds of the City is the outdoor music event of the summer happening Thursdays from 5-8:30pm. The concerts begin Thursday, July 10 and run until end of August.
Here is the Sounds of the City 2014 Schedule:
July 10: Rhythm Revue with Felix Hernandez
Felix Hernandez's Rhythm Revue returns to kick off NJPAC's annual Sounds of the City outdoor music dance party. Admission is free. Now in its 28th year on the New York City airwaves, the live classic soul, disco and funk show is also heard on WBGO Jazz88.3. Rhythm Revue has been recognized as the "Best Radio Show" in New York by New York magazine and The Village Voice.
July 17: Third World
Ten-time Grammy-nominated Third World has been entertaining fans around the globe for four decades, with smashes like "Not That We Found Love" and "96 Degrees in the Shade." These "Reggae Ambassadors" push the cutting edge of world music by mixing elements of R&B, funk, pop-rock and dancehall into reggae-fusion music.
July 24: Red Baraat
Red Baraat, a pioneering eight-piece band from Brooklyn, merges hard-driving North Indian bhangra rhythms with elements of jazz, go-go, brass funk and hip-hop. The band's powerful live performance can be experienced at NJPAC's Sounds of the City free outdoor concert series. This party jam, led by founder and percussionist Sunny Jain, includes tracks such as "Halla Bol," a "raise your voice" anthem sung in Hindi, and "Burning Instinct," which plays like a Quentin Tarantino car chase.
July 31: Eddie Palmieri, Salsa Orchestra
Bandleader and pianist Eddie Palmieri, last year's recipient of the Latin Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award, returns with his Salsa Orchestra to NJPAC's Sounds of the City outdoor concert series.
August 7: Funky Meters
Throughout a 31-year history, the Funky Meters ("Fiyo on the Bayou") have grooved their way around the globe as the founding fathers of funk. Originally featuring brothers Art and Cyril Neville, the New Orleans band has performed with the Rolling Stones, Dr. John and Paul McCartney. The regrouped Meters retain their trademark sound, blending funk, blues and dance grooves with a Big Easy vibe.
August 14: Black Violin, Brick City Jazz Orchestra
Virtuoso violinists Kev Marcus and Wil B are Black Violin - dynamic, classically trained musicians on a mission to prove that classical music can be cool. Their electrifying style mines the synergy of classical, jazz, blues, R&B and hip-hop. Whether you lean toward Bach or Beyoncé, Black Violin's innovative style is sure to entrall - and rock the house to its core. The talented teen musicians of the Brick City Jazz Orchestra - NJPAC's "Ambassadors of Jazz" - open the concert with some special accompaniment by Black Violin.
August 21: Living Colour
The hard-rocking, Grammy Award winning Living Colour performs greatest hits ("Cult of Personality," "Glamour Boys") at NJPAC's hottest outdoor music series. The band first achieved fame when it was "discovered" by Mick Jagger and toured as the opening act for the Rolling Stones. Formed in the mid-"˜80s, the group is reunited for this sizzling concert.
August 29: Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber
Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber, featuring guitarist Vernon Reid of Living Colour and conductor Greg Tate, freely moves among many styles, eras and genres to devise its exciting hybrids of musical traditions and cutting-edge technology. In a free performance as part of NJPAC's Sounds of the City outdoor concert series, the group freely juggles a wide swath of the experimental soul-jazz-hip-hop spectrum. This accomplished crew has playing credits with Toshi Reagon, DJ Logic, Phish and others.
