Summer 2015: Recreation Programs

There are a lot programs and activities that Newark Recreation has to offer this SUMMER. Take advantage and spread the info! All programs are FREE and open to Newark residents only. Camps

Camp Watershed:
This 2-week camp in West Milford, NJ is for Newark residence only. Each participant has an opportunity to experience an accredited outdoor camp experience where they will participate in activities such as swimming, archery, arts and crafts, hiking, low and high ropes, field sports, fishing, gardening, and much more. Camp is in session from June 29 – August 21st. More info

SHE WINS! Inc, Girls Leadership Academy is a summer camp for girls who have lost a parent or sibling to homicide in the Newark area. Monday – Friday, June 30th– August 7th at Hayes Park West, Center of Hope, 79 Boyd Street, 07108. Contact A’Dorian Murray- Thomas at 973-274-5592 or 973-280-2129 with questions.

 

Aerobics:

Cardio/Step Aerobics/ Boot Camp on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursday from 6-7pm and on Saturdays from 10-11am at JFK Recreation Center.

Shani Baraka Skills and Drills Basketball Camp:
July 6th - August 21st at JFK Recreation Center from 9am – 4pm. This program will teach the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, shooting and much more.

Basketball Coaches Clinic:
This special engagement is hosted by Coach Bob Hurley, Head Coach of St. Anthony’s Boys Basketball Team (Jersey City, NJ) at JFK Recreation Center on Monday, June 22, 2015 from 5pm-7pm.

Summer Bowling Instructional Program:
This instructional program is from June 19th – August 21st from 3-7pm for youth 7-17 teaching the fundamental aspects of bowling. Space is limited. Registration is required!!

Boxing:
DORCA Boxing Academy at Boylan Street Recreation Center, 07106. This new program is for males and females; ages 7- adult. Registration is required!!

Bricks 4 Kids:
July 6th – August 20th at St. Peter’s Recreation Center on Monday – Friday from 10am – 12pm. This program provides an extraordinary atmosphere for children, where we learn, we build, we play… with LEGO® Bricks. The programs is built around proprietary model plans, designed by engineers and architects, with exciting themes such as space, construction, and amusement parks. The specially designed project kits and theme-based models provide the building blocks for the Bricks 4 Kidz approach to educational play. At Bricks 4 Kidz, the belief that kids learn best through activities that engage their curiosity and creativity.

Cheerleading Camp (Fundamentals):
July 13th – 24th (Monday – Friday) at JFK Recreation Center from 8:30am – 1pm. (Participant must attend both weeks.) This camp will focus on the fundamentals of cheer - stunting, motions, dance, jumps, strength, and flexibility. Registration is required!!

Summer Chess Program:
July 8th – August 19th at SJKAG Recreation Center on Wednesdays from 3-4pm.

Double Dutch Training Camp:
August 10th - 14th (Monday – Friday) at JFK Recreation Center from 8:30am – 2pm. Participants will learn the 3 fundamental components of the sport of Double Dutch; speed, compulsory, and freestyle.

Hip Hop 101:
Now - August 29th on Saturdays from 12-2pm at SJKAG Recreation Center. This introduction to hip-hop dance class is for participants 10 and older.

 

Martial Arts:

Aiki Nu Bu Kai is a form of karate that will be taught July 6th – August 20th on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 10:30 – 11:30am at St. Peter’s Recreation Center. This program supports an anti-bullying campaign. The goal is for the participants to become leaders and build character.

Fuquan Federation hosts karate year round on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at St. Peter’s Recreation Center from 6-8pm.

Karate lessons at JFK Recreation Center from 5:30 - 7:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

SHINE Tumblers Program:
This program for youth encompasses all aspects of tumbling for both those who cheer and primarily for those interested in simply learning to tumble rather than engage in all aspects of gymnastics. This program is broken into two skill/ability specific levels: beginning and intermediate. The beginner level introduces students to tumbling and teaches the basic skills from forward and backward rolls up to back handsprings. The intermediate level helps students to perfect back handsprings and introduces students to more difficult skills such as tucks and layouts.

SHINE Tumblers Beginner Camp:
July 6th - 10th at JFK Recreation Center from 9am – 3pm
August 3rd - 7th at SJ/KAG Recreation Center from 9am – 3pm

Shine Tumblers Intermediate Practice:
August 5th – 28th at SJ/KAG Recreation Center on Wednesdays and Fridays from 4-6pm

Newark Soccer Club:
June 13th – August 22nd (Saturdays only) from 8am – 10am at Nat Turner Park. This program is designed for participants 7-17 years old, teaching the basic skills and techniques of the international sport of soccer.

Soul Line Dancing:
July 15th – 29th at JFK Recreation Center on Wednesdays from 6-7:30pm; August 4th – 18th at JFK Recreation Center on Tuesdays from 6-7:30pm. Learn the latest line dancing steps to popular Soul, R&B, and Hip-Hop music with Step 4 Step Soul Line Dancers. You ask what is soul line dancing? It is simply choreographed dancing done in a line to soul and R&B music. Come join us to learn, dance, and have a great time.

Team Step Up:
July 6th – August 20th at St. Peter’s Recreation Center on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10am – 11:30am. This step, fitness, and dance program will include a portion of mentoring along with generating a complete body workout.

 

AQUATICS PROGRAMMING AT JFK POOL:

Lap Swim/Rec Swim (Adults Only):
Monday - Friday from 7-7:30am.
Saturdays from 9:30am – 5:30pm

Learn to Swim: Registration is required.
(Youth)- Monday - Friday from 9:30am – 11am. Each class is 30 minutes.
(Adult)- Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am – 12pm.

Swim Team:
(Youth) Practice on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 5:30-7pm.
(Adults) Master Swim on Saturdays from 10am – 12:30pm.

Water Aerobics:
(Seniors)- Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am -11am.
(Low- impact)- Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-6pm.
