Top 20 Events to do in Newark for June 2016
There are nearly 350 events in June (and growing) throughout the city so choosing twenty is a feat, but here are some of our top highlights. Check out our calendar - the largest in the city - with almost (for the few missed) every event in the city all in one place!
June 4: Walk to the River & River Day
Meet the active citizens of Newark at City Hall, make a sign and walk to the Riverfront chanting and singing songs! Riverfront Park will then be alive with performances, music, fitness classes and so much more. Make a day of it with the whole family.

June 4: Lower Broadway Live
Lower Broadway launches a new monthly series bringing to life Lower Broadway first Saturdays of the month. This first month will be a Latin Dance Party. The first hour will be a dance tutorial by Smiling David's Dance Studio.

June 5: Fire Muster & Parade
The streets of downtown Newark will be painted red with fire trucks new and old parading. Newark Firefighters Pipe and Drum Band will be on-site and children (both young and old) can inspect fire trucks and pose for pictures after the trucks take their place on Washington Street.

June 7-21: TreeKeeper Classes
Work on your green thumb with three TreeKeeper Classes put together by the NJ Tree Foundation. Classes are FREE for Newark residents and will take place at the Weequahic Park Field House. Learn Basic Tree Biology, Tree Planting and Pruning, and learn about the Watershed. Take all three and become a Newark Certified TreeKeeper!

June 10-12: Portuguese Festival
Let the Sangria flow and sardines hit the grill as the Portuguese festival returns to Ferry Street for their annual feast. Festivities include children's activities, vendors, music and of course food.

June 11: Rock the Block Art Block Party
It's festival season for Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District - The Art Block Party includes clean-up, unveiling of a new mural, live art, live DJ's and performances. Donate your old kicks for Newark's Needy and create your own sustainable recycled art.

June 18: Jazz Meets Dayton Street
Celebrating the sweet sounds of Jazz and music that filled the air in Newark by such greats as Sarah Vaughan, Wayne Shorter, Melba Moore, James Moody and Newark's own Antoinette Montague. Celebrate Juneteenth and the spirit of freedom and continued renewal for this great city.

New to the Military Park summer schedule are free architecture tours downtown starting at Military Park. The tours are run by historians, artists, architects, students, and residents of Newark.

Hell's Kitchen Lounge hosts Woofstock and their 9th Anniversary Party on the street with a fun way to benefit NJ animals in need! Meet local rescue organizations with adoptable dogs and cats from 12-4pm while enjoying live bands/dj's all day, craft beer, food and more!

June 26: Index BBQ Fundraiser
Enjoy an intimate evening in the backyard of 27 Mix to benefit Index Art Center. $35 entry provides brews and wines, prepared foods off the grill including the famous Merkel burger and special prints made on site by the Newark Print Shop.
