Ujimaa Garden 2013 Kickoff

Ujimaa Garden 2013 Kickoff

The Ujimaa Community Garden in the central ward kicked off last Saturday with a planting kick-off and cookout. The garden is located at 297-303 Morris Avenue (between 14th & 15th Avenues) and was started in October (see past article).

300 flowers were donated by Kean University's "Be The Change" project and planted by community members. The Newark Fire Department was a part of the day by filling up the rain barrels.

A "Living Memorial Corner" was created and Saturday the community prayed as each name of the deceased was real aloud. The families now have a place they can visit with flowers that bloom every year if they can't make it to a graveyard.

A fundraiser is being planned for June to raise money for supplies for the garden. It will be a charity basketball game between the Ujimaa Garden "Residents of NCC" vs. the Newark Fire Department "The Flames". More details to come.
