Welcome Mayor Quintana

Welcome Mayor Quintana

Today, Acting Mayor and Municipal Council President Luis A. Quintana was unanimously voted by the Municipal Council to serve as the City of Newark's Mayor in an emergency meeting of the Newark Municipal Council this morning, becoming the City's first Latino Mayor in its 300-year history. Mayor Quintana immediately took his oath of office in the Council Chamber, with Councilmember-at-Large Mildred Crump holding the Bible. Mayor Quintana will fill out the unexpired term of former Mayor Cory A. Booker, who resigned effective midnight, Thursday, October 31, hours before taking his oath as New Jersey's junior Senator, in Washington, D.C. Mayor Quintana will serve until July 1, 2014, when Mayor Booker's term expires. A new mayor will be elected in the municipal general elections in May 2014, when that seat and all municipal council seats will be voted on by the public.
